Building a cover: Star Trek/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 issue 7

I received a request from someone on twitter to photograph the process of a Star Trek/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 cover on my blog. Unfortunately I was already halfway through this one at the time, so there are some early steps missing.

Next month I will share the process of the issue 8 cover from the beginning and in more detail, but until then....

As usual I created a sketch for approval and when I had something approved, I projected it on larger paper suitable for painting (in this case Aquarelle Arches, cold pressed 140lb 18"x 24" watercolour paper -- cut in half to 12"x18") and refined the detail.

I then painted the complete background .

Next I started painting midground objects, starting from the ones furthest behind and ending with those closest to the 'camera'.  I also tend to paint these objects from upper left to lower right to prevent smearing or fading. Remember gouache is pigment in a liquid media. When dry it's just the pigment stuck together much like a thin layer of dry mud or clay. It doesn't easily wipe off, but you should avoid contact with it as much as possible.

The title of the peice. Since it's the Tardis at Wolf 359, I incorporated 2 familiar components from both the Star trek and Doctor Who mythos; Bad Wolf and Wolf 359.

The Tardis is the final object painted.

I removed the crude painted loettering I had done on the TARDIS and replaced it with digital detail. I also added the sign and ambulance logo digitally.
Finally I add some airbrush flourish for lighting effect and its complete.
